The winner of the 15th Ostrava Kamera Oko festival is the Canadian film Mademoiselle Kenopsia

The winner of the 15th edition of the Ostrava Kamera Oko International Film Festival is now revealed. The main prize was awarded to the Canadian film by cinematographer Vincent Biron Mademoiselle Kenopsia. The jury awarded a Special Prize to cinematographer Victoria Pereda for her film Human Surge 3. The film Trip by cinematographer Jan Vališ won the Short Film Competition, and the jury gave a Special Mention to the film Impulsum by cinematographer Filip Hájek. The festival took place from 15th to 19th November in Ostrava, and almost 2000 spectators attended its programme.

The screening of Annexions, which will take place on Saturday, 18 November, in the new music hall of Ostrava University in the City Campus at Černá louka, will be accompanied by a thirty-piece orchestra conducted by French conductor Jacque Mercier. Czech students (from Ostrava’s Wichterle Grammar School) and students from France and Germany participated in the film together with a professional Czech French staff under the Erasmus+ programme.

Camera in animation, screenings with live orchestra, new films from Cannes, debuts of young filmmakers, graphic design in the film industry, and women behind the camera – Ostrava Kamera Oko (OKO) announces the first topics, films and guests of this year’s programme. The fifteenth edition of the only domestic festival with a focus on the camera starts on 15 November 2023 and runs for five days. It takes place at the Plato Ostrava Gallery, Minikino, the Etáž cinema in Dolní Vítkovice, and other venues in Ostrava.

The Ostrava Kamera Oko International Film Festival will take place for the fifteenth time this year, this time in a new date from November 15th to 19th. It will offer traditional curatorial selections, short and feature competition films, as well as an intense audiovisual program. This year, we are going to join forces with the Women Cinematographers Prague initiative. Now, OKO is unveiling the visual design of the 15th edition and preparing the sale of accreditations, which will be available in the GoOut network from June 1st.

„The Ostrava Kamera Oko Festival is a truly unique. For me, it was the reason why I came back to Ostrava.“

Ostrava native, graduate of Theory and History of Dramatic Arts at Palacký University in Olomouc. She has been working at Ostrava Kamera Oko since 2015 and has been the festival’s director since 2017. She has been gaining her experience for more than ten years working at selected film festivals in the Czech Republic. Since 2013, she has coordinated international rights and film copies at the Summer Film School in Uherské Hradiště, and the Czech programme at the Jihlava IDFF. She has also worked at Academia Film Olomouc and the Animation Film Showcase in Olomouc, at UKUH and at the IFF Trenčianske Teplice. In addition to film, she is also a professional photographer and interior designer.

Jana Hojdová is a cinematographer, director, and producer. This year she made her feature film debut with the confident and visually refined title Mirrors in the Dark (2021, dir. Šimon Holý). She is currently working on a documentary about the cinematography legend Robert Richardson, a long-time collaborator of Quentin Tarantino. At the last edition of OKO she acted as one of the main jurors and at the same time presented her masterclass Knowing Hollywood.

“When I feel like an author…”

David Fesl is a conceptual sculptor and visual artist who works with found objects and material fragments in his installations, grouping, and connecting them into surprising wholes. Since 2016 he has also been working in an artistic duo with Sláva Sobotovičová, together they have been creating institutional-critical texts and performances. At this year’s edition, he presented in his curator selection the hypnotic films Post Tenebras Lux (Carlos Reygadas, 2012) and Last and First Men (Jóhann Jóhannsson, 2020).

The International Film Festival Ostrava Kamera Oko – the one and only cinematography festival in the Czech Republic – has finished its thirteenth year. The drama True Mothers by cinematographer Yûta Tsukinaga won in the Official Selection, the main competition of the festival. The Special Jury Prize went to France by cinematographer David Chambill. The Short Film Competition was won by Lubomir Ballek’s Sing for us and the Special Jury Prize went to cinematographer Helena Fikerová’s for her film Sleeping. The festival, which was this year attended by five hundred spectators, ended on Sunday, 3 October.

“About The Glory Of The Terrible Eliz, screenwriting disillusionment and fear of actors”

Eliška Kováříková and Adam Struhala began their creative collaboration while studying at the Department of Screenwriting and Dramaturgy at FAMU in Prague. They also currently run Film Acting Courses for Children. At this year’s festival, as part of the retrospective of cinematographer Tomáš Frkal, they presented their short film The Glory of the Terrible Eliz (2021), which stands out for its playful visual stylization and its determination not to underestimate the children’s audience. This multi-genre ride full of film references is described as a revival of the declining tradition of Czech children’s film. First and foremost, however, it is a sovereign presentation of the authorial duo with insight and a feeling for film language.

The 13th edition of the international film festival focused on cinematography, Ostrava Kamera Oko, starts on Wednesday 29 September with a screening of the new Czech-Swiss comedy Lost in Paradise. Over the course of five days, the festival will offer more than thirty short and feature-length films from the fields of fiction, documentary, and experimental film with an overlap into the visual arts, as well as an extensive accompanying programme. The festival will run until Sunday 3 October.

The ninth annual film festival focused on camera work takes place from Friday, September 22 to Thursday, September 28, 2017. Ostrava Kamera Oko festival’s program takes place in the whole of Ostrava. It caters not only for experts in cinematography, but also for the general public. Besides the film projection (including previews) and presentations, this year’s festival also includes masterclass and specialist workshops, exhibitions and evening concerts followed by after-parties.

From September 23 to September 28, Ostrava hosted the 8th annual International film festival Ostrava Kamera Oko. Jonathan Ricquebourg, the cameraman and the winner of the main contest, was awarded the first prize for his cooperation with Albert Serra, the director of the movie called The Death Of Louis XIV.  The short movie contest was won by Adam Mach who was awarded for his camera work in the movie called Strach (The Fear).
